Winter is the hardest season on your vehicle. Cold temperatures, ice and wet conditions combine to expose weaknesses that go unnoticed the rest of the year. Knowing what tends to fail and having a plan when it does, saves time, money, and a lot of standing around in the cold!
1. Dead or Weak Batteries
Battery failure is the single most common cause of winter breakdowns. Cold slows the chemical reaction inside a battery, cutting available cranking power by up to 50% at freezing temperatures. At the same time, thickened engine oil demands more power to turn the engine over.
Watch out for the warning signs – slow cranking, dimming headlights at idle and dashboard warning lights.
Make sure to test your battery before winter arrives. Most batteries last three to five years. If yours is near the end of that window, you may wish to replace it proactively.
2. Underinflated & Worn Tyres
Tyre pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 5°C decrease in temperature. Underinflated tyres reduce grip, wear unevenly, and increase stopping distances on already slippery roads.
What to do: Check pressures at least monthly during winter, ideally when tyres are cold. Ensure tread depth is well above the 1.6mm (the legal minimum for Australians). Grip matters far more in wet and icy conditions.
3. Windscreen Frost & Fogging
Frosted windscreens are a regular reality in Canberra, Orange, Ballarat, Armidale, and much of inland NSW and Victoria. Interior fogging is even more widespread – humid coastal winters from Brisbane to Melbourne mean fogged glass most mornings.
What to do: Never pour hot water on a frozen windscreen; the thermal shock can crack it. Use the demister, a proper scraper, or a de-icer spray. Check your demister and rear window heater are working before you need them, and make sure your air conditioning is functional. It’s the fastest way to clear interior fog.
4. Reduced Visibility
Worn wiper blades smear rather than clear. Poorly aimed or dirty headlights make short winter days genuinely dangerous. Interior fogging compounds the problem.
Replace wipers annually, clean headlight lenses, and check your demister and rear window heater are working before you need them.
5. Wet Weather & Flooding
Winter in northern NSW, southeast Queensland, and parts of Victoria brings sustained heavy rain. Aquaplaning, flooded causeways, and water-damaged electrics are far more common Australian winter problems than ice ever will be.
Never drive through floodwater. Depth and current are almost impossible to judge, and it’s the leading cause of flood-related deaths in Australia. Check your tyres can actually shed water, and be aware that stopping distances on wet bitumen can double.
When Prevention Isn’t Enough – On Demand Roadside Assistance
Even a well-maintained car can fail, and Australian distances make that worse. A breakdown between towns can leave you a long way from help. Road Angels offers on-demand roadside assistance with no annual membership: you request help when you actually need it, see transparent upfront pricing before you commit, and there’s no waiting period or eligibility gap. It covers the failures Australian winters produce most often: jump starts, flat tyre changes, fuel delivery, and towing. Because cover is requested per incident rather than tied to a policy, it works whether you’re in your own car, a borrowed one, or a hire vehicle.
